Traveling to Egypt in 2026: No More Lists, Just Adventure

It is incredible to look back at the "Red List" era of 2021. For those who remember the stress of hotel quarantines and "prison-like" isolations, the travel landscape of May 2026 is a breath of fresh air.

The complicated "Traffic Light System" of Green, Amber, and Red lists was officially scrapped years ago. Today, Egypt is fully open, and traveling from the UK is as simple as it was in the pre-pandemic days—if not even better, thanks to new digital tools.

The End of COVID Restrictions

The days of PCR tests, Lateral Flows, and Passenger Locator Forms are behind us.

  • No Quarantine: There are no quarantine requirements for travelers returning to the UK from Egypt, regardless of vaccination status.
  • No Testing: You no longer need to take a "fit to fly" test before leaving Egypt or a "Day 2" test upon arrival in the UK.
  • NHS App: While the app was once a requirement for travel, it is now primarily used for your own health records. You do not need to show a "COVID Pass" to enter Egypt or return home.

Current Entry Requirements (May 2026)

While COVID is no longer a barrier, there are a few standard travel essentials to keep in mind for your 2026 escape:

1. The Egyptian Visa British passport holders still require a visa, which is easily obtained.

  • Visa on Arrival: As of March 1, 2026, the fee for a single-entry visa on arrival is $30 USD (approximately £25pp). We recommend bringing exact cash in USD or GBP.
  • E-Visa: You can also apply in advance via the official Visa2Egypt portal for $25 USD.
  • Sharm El Sheikh: If you are staying in Sharm for 15 days or less and not leaving the resort area, you can still get a free entry stamp.

2. Passport Validity Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you arrive in Egypt. Check your expiry dates early to avoid any last-minute stress!

Safety and Security Update

In 2026, Egypt continues to welcome over a million British visitors annually. While the "Red List" is gone, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) still provides regional guidance:

  • Green Zones (Safe to Travel): The main tourist corridor—including Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan, and the Red Sea resorts (Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, Marsa Alam)—is considered safe and operates normally.
  • Regional Risks: The FCDO continues to advise against travel to North Sinai and areas near the Libyan border. These are not areas typically visited by tourists, so your standard "Bucket List" tour remains unaffected.

Why 2026 is the Year for Egypt

With the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) now fully open and powered by its new solar station (inaugurated May 4, 2026), Egypt has successfully moved from "surviving" the pandemic to "thriving" as a global leader in tourism.

At Egypt Escapes, we are thrilled to be sending travelers to a country that is vibrant, open, and more welcoming than ever. Our "Egypt Experts" are available 7 days a week to help you plan a trip that is 100% adventure and 0% quarantine.
